During two subsequent years as TAs, students will continue to teach composition, but may apply to teach beginning creative writing by submitting a request to the director of creative writing. In cases where the major and minor lists consist primarily of literary works, the criticism and theory list must include sections covering the major works of criticism and/or theory in those fields. Selection of teachers is made by faculty in the appropriate genres. The outside faculty member need not be involved in this meeting, but all four members of the committee must sign the D-1 form. Of these students, approximately one-fourth are working at the MA level and three-fourths are working at the PhD level. When the student submits the final version to the committee, committee members will evaluate it for range and depth of coverage, specificity of references to the works discussed, theoretical grasp of the material and clarity of organization and style. Undergraduate students may take multiple courses in creative writing in the following genres: poetry, short fiction, screen and play scripts, and creative nonfiction. Federal law and UWM policy require programs and departments to have procedures for graduate students to appeal academic decisions such as grades or scholastic standing. By Graduate School rules, seven months must elapse between a student's successfully passing the PhD Comprehensive Examination and submitting the PhD dissertation. MPhil students are required to demonstrate a systematic understanding of knowledge and a critical awareness of current problems and/or new insights informed by the forefront of their discipline, field of study or professional practice. We offer our graduates expert support in professional preparation for a literary career and encourage them to begin to establish a publication record. All three lists together should comprise approximately 100 -120 book length works or the equivalent in scholarly articles or works in other media (as decided in consultation with the committee), with the major list roughly equivalent in size to the combined minor and criticism/theory lists. A PhD involves demonstrating through original research or other advanced scholarship the creation and interpretation of new knowledge, a systematic acquisition and understanding of a substantial body of knowledge at the forefront of an academic discipline or professional practice, the ability to conceptualise, design and implement a project for the general of new knowledge, applications or understanding at the forefront of the discipline. Assistantships include salary, health insurance and a complete tuition waiver. But if you want to teach at Yale, that's another story. For the DTP, because the different institutions can combine to offer so much, we like applicants to consider as imaginatively as possible how they might benefit from this. Creative Writing at Brunel organises a hugely successful annual series of public writer readings by some of Britain's most exciting authors, which provide an opportunity for all students to debate and mingle with professional writers. Your research proposal (2 single-spaced, or 4 double-spaced pages) should give a clear account of the proposed creative manuscript, the proposed contextualising research, and the integral relationship between these two strands.
